Computer Science Professor Makes Security Cameras Smarter
Shishir Shah, a Computer Science professor, has received a grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Public Safety Innovation Accelerator Program to research ways in which to create “smart” security systems that can alert first responders to issues like crime and accidents. This research will be a collaboration with the City of Houston to address the needs of public safety and the Department of Homeland Security. The reasoning for this type of “smart” camera is because it would not be reasonable to have people watching all of the cameras around a University or city, so having cameras that can alert responders to problems autonomously would be of great value and go a long ways in saving lives.
Congratulations to Professor Shah and we can’t wait to see his lab’s results!
